The Army

14 Oct

Today’s assignment is proving a little difficult for me. It tells me to share a picture of my family. Well, guess what. I have lots of pictures of each individual person, but ever since Lola was born either Johnny or I have been behind the camera and we don’t have a single picture of all of us together other than this one:

and this one makes it a little difficult to tell what Lola looks like...

So in light of that I’m also going to share a recent picture of each of us and tell you a little about my family.

The Mama

So this is me. I’m 29 for the second year in a row, and I’m the Mommy. I love scrapbooking, baking and of course blogging! Sometimes I wonder what I did before the kids came along but then I remember – I slept through the night and used the bathroom without someone yelling through the door!

Not the Mama

This picture pretty much sums up Johnny. Wherever he is, the kids aren’t far behind. He’s almost 28, he likes photography and gaming, and he’s the love of my life. He’s a great dad, and always helps out in any area that help is needed.

The Hooligan

James is our oldest. Our wild child. He can’t stay still or keep quiet if his life depends on it. He likes Bakugan and Wii and the outdoors and all those other things that an 8 year old loves. This boy changed my life and continues to change it daily. He is precious to me. People judge me because I allow him to live with his grandparents, but they don’t realize that I just love him too much to make him leave.

The Genius

Hayden is our smart one. He’s going to be 6 in November and he’s wowing his teachers with how much he knows. He’s a very high-maintenence child with a lot of other difficulties, but brainpower isn’t one of them. He loves reading, Ironman, drawing and building things.

The Explorer

Silas is curious and inquisitive and wants to know the hows and whys of everything. He’ll be four in December and is into everything because he wants to know how it works and what it does. He’s a cuddler, a lover and a bully all rolled into one. He’s big for his age and doesn’t mind pushing back when he’s pushed!

The Princess

The first girl after three boys, Lola just sits on her throne while we all worship at her feet. She is three months old today and already knows who rules the roost – She does. An amazingly pleasant baby, she’s usually all smiles and coos and her giggle is to die for! I think she’s the prettiest baby in the world. I may be biased, but I’m allowed because I’m her mommy!

So there you have the army…and that reminds me; I need to schedule family photos!

My (Other) Best Friend

11 Oct

Most of us have heard that phrase, “I want to marry my best friend.” It’s a popular one because everyone wants to marry someone who they can confide in and have fun with. Someone who knows them inside out.

Well I never wanted to marry my best friend.

The thought of being married to someone who knew me that well kind of freaked me out. What’s to love about being married to someone who knows the ugly truth about all of your bad habits and has watched you cry into your beer (or in my case, anything but beer) about how your co-workers are all snobs or how you feel fat. Someone who has watched you devour half a chocolate cake in one sitting. Somehow, that kind of kills the some of the mystery of romance to me.

So I swore up and down that I would never marry my best friend, and I didn’t. I married Johnny. We’d been friends before we started dating, but I definitely wouldn’t have called him my best friend. I wouldn’t fart in front of the guy, for pete’s sake, and that’s a huge indicator of friendship right there. If you’re still shy about bodily functions, you aren’t best friends!

We were married in January of 2004 and by December of 2006 had three children. That’s when we started to realize that everything had changed. Our relationships with our friends were different. They were mostly single and childless and we were drifting farther and farther apart from them. We didn’t get out much, so making new friends was hard. We were forced to cling to each other in order to maintain some sanity. Besides, the children outnumbered us now. We couldn’t afford to let them divide and conquer.

October of 2007

Without even realizing it, he’d become my confidante. That one person I could count on to make me laugh. The one I turned to when something was upsetting me. Heck, I even got over the farting issue! (And oh boy so did he.)

That was when I realized that no…I never wanted to marry my best friend – and I didn’t. Instead I married a man who became my best friend, and that made all the difference.

Today’s assignment was to share yet another picture of me with my friend(s) and what better friend to share with you than the one with whom I share my life.

Happy Thanksgiving to my Canadian friends…today I am thankful for my husband – my (other) best friend.

More Winter Fun

30 Dec

Since I posted a plethoria of Christmas pictures for you all yesterday, I thought I’d just make you all suffer through a few more!

Note: These first pictures were taken before Christmas…and all the snow in them had melted by Christmas day. Now we have none again.

Hayden on his sled

When I look at this picture I have to stop and catch my breath every time. I can’t believe how much he’s grown up. He’s changed more in the past few months than he did in the year before that.

Sweet Cheeks

Of course I expected all the changes with Silas. He went from being a toddler to being a little boy. It’s still hard to believe though.

Perfect Snow Angel

However, as Auntie Da pointed out, the hard part of making the perfect snow angel is getting out of it without stepping on it.

Throwing snow in each other's face...at close range.

They really had a blast doing this. Must be a guy thing.

The above photo is, without a doubt, one of my favorite photos of the year. Somehow it really captured the spirit of Hayden and Silas, at least to me. It’s being enlarged and framed for my family room.

Seriously, who could resist that smile? Even if that smile is on the face of a child who has just strewn toys ALL OVER MY LIVING ROOM.

Blue Eyes

It’s easy to see where Silas inherited those eyes.

What makes my holidays happy

Doesn’t get much better than this.

Oh and Silas wanted to wish you Happy Holidays and a safe and joyous New Year…

Macaulay Culkin?! Is that you?!

…but then he realized how complicated uploading pictures and well, you know, spelling words is…and decided to let me do it instead. 😉

More Sickies…Bigger Ones

5 Nov

Since the bout of the flu that Hayden and Silas had, I’ve been kind of walking on the proverbial eggshells waiting for the next wave of illness to hit our house. Usually if the kids have it, it gets passed to Johnny and I shortly thereafter and I’m usually the hardest hit. I must have practically no immune system because if there’s a virus, I will get it. A small cold that causes Hayden to sniffle for 24 hours will have me confined to the sofa for a week. I catch everything and it lingers.

But this flu came and went without me catching it. Strange. Silas and Hayden recovered slowly, with barely a runny nose to show for it now, and I…didn’t catch it. I started to relax. Maybe it wouldn’t strike us this time!

Alas, it was not to be. Johnny is sick…brutally so. Head cold, cough, aches and pains. Yup, it’s the flu…and I have to nurse my sickie hubs back to health.

Stay tuned for part 3 – Sickies: The Crazy Mommy.
