Wedding – Part 1

19 Sep

In a time when nothing is more certain than change, the commitment of two people to one another has become difficult and rare.  Yet, by its scarcity, the beauty and value of this exchange have only been enhanced.  ~Robert Sexton

I couldn’t do just one post on Beckie’s wedding. It couldn’t be done. So for the next several posts I’m going to share the pictures and story of the wedding of my sweet niece.

If you don’t remember how special Beckie is to me, you might want to check out my post on November 9, 2009, which was a birthday post for her. Beckie and I have always been very close, more like sisters. In fact, she always called me “Sissy” and almost 20 years later, still does. When she asked me to be her bridesmaid, I was more than touched. I was so honored that she wanted me to be a part of the most special day of her life.

So on September 1st, we made our way to Marble Mountain in Corner Book, Newfoundland to make the preparations for her wedding the next day. It’s a very pretty place and I can definitely see why she chose to get married there.

Beckie and her fiancé Jason drove over with their friends Keith and Amy and their baby Charlotte, arriving long before myself and my sister Linda, who drove over with Lola after we got up and felt like moving. Yeah…we’re not morning people. It was a pretty uneventful drive, only having to stop to feed Lola once and then stop again to change her diaper. When we got there, we went to our room to settle in and start the rehearsal.

Beckie wanted to be married outside, on the little bridge near the pond. We had to overcome several obstacles to do this.

Waiting for the music to start...

Obstacles such as how to get the music to play loudly enough from an iPod broadcasting through a car speaker to hear it from the parking lot to where we were standing…

Holy cow I'm SHORT!

…what to do about the fact that our placement had me standing in a hole and Tiffany standing on a bump which made me look like a midget and her look like a Sasquatch in comparison. As if the 8 inch height difference wasn’t bad enough already…

Finally we all made it there!

…and what to do about the mosquito problem. Seriously, the little buggers were eating us alive. I suggested instead of wearing perfume that we all wear Off! insect repellant!

I’m sorry I don’t have any pictures of the rehearsal dinner…but boy do I have a story for you. Now I believe I have mentioned my nephew Adam here before. If not, here’s a short summary. Adam is Beckie’s older brother. He is also one of my very best friends in the world. He is also Silas and Lola’s godfather. And he proved himself to also be the very best big brother in the history of mankind.

Adam was to be Beckie’s photographer and her DJ for the wedding. He didn’t have much time off work, so he arranged his schedule so that he would be arriving at the wedding location the evening before the wedding – in time for the rehearsal dinner – and flying back out the next afternoon. Yeah. That was the plan.

Well, you know what they say about the best-laid plan of mice and men…and Adam’s travel itinerary was no exception. Fog rolled into town right before his flight was set to take off and he was delayed. Due to that delay he missed his connecting flight in Toronto. Due to missing that flight, he called us in a panic during the rehearsal dinner telling us that the airline was telling him that they couldn’t get him in Newfoundland until the next night at midnight…after the wedding was over.

Well, fortunately we work best in a crisis! As we all called in any favors we had and used any connections we knew, we were able to secure Adam a flight that would land in St. John’s – 7 hours away – at 3am. That was the good news. The bad news was that there was no guarantee of a flight to where we were in time for the wedding.

Linda to the rescue! She and her ex-husband Keith made the drive to St. John’s and back – yes, all 14 hours – to get Adam and make sure he was there in time for Beckie’s wedding. Neither of the 3 slept the night before the wedding but they still managed to perform in their roles beautifully!

Stay tuned for part 2…Wedding morning!!!
